Semtech Extends RailClamp Surge Protection Family with Enhanced Solution for Shielding High-Speed Interfaces like DVI, HDMI, GbE, USB 2.0, and Firewire

New device offers industry-leading surge protection technology for one power line and four signal lines carrying signals up to one GigaHertz

Camarillo, California - June 16, 2003

Semtech Corp. (NASDAQ: SMTC), a leading supplier of analog and mixed-signal semiconductors for communications, portable devices, computers, and industrial equipment, today announced availability of the versatile RClamp™0504M, a new member of its RailClamp® family of miniature voltage surge protection devices. The new device offers a robust, easy-to-implement solution for protecting high-speed interfaces of sensitive integrated circuits, which are vulnerable to damaging transient events that can enter through external plug ports.

"With the FCC now advising television manufacturers to adopt high-speed digital interfaces such as DVI (Digital Video Interface) and HDMI (High Definition Multimedia Interface) by 2004, plasma and high-definition TVs are a key market for the RClamp0504M," says Tom Dugan, Director of Protection Products at Semtech. "The new device is also perfect for many other systems that use high-speed interfaces such as the Universal Serial Bus, Gigabit Ethernet, and Firewire--systems like computers and servers; video monitors and flat panel displays; graphics cards; set-top boxes; DVD players; computer peripherals; networking gear; and industrial control systems."

The RClamp0504M integrates four surge-rated, low-capacitance steering diodes and an avalanche TVS diode. The steering diodes are configured to protect up to four high-speed signal lines by clamping the lines to a fixed reference voltage. When the voltage on the protected line exceeds the reference voltage, the transient current is steered away from sensitive circuitry downstream. The TVS diode can be used to prevent an over-voltage condition on the positive power supply rail.

The RClamp0504M is also configured to simplify board layout. The package and pin layout enable designers to use a "flow through" design, routing high-speed signal traces without changing trace spacing or routing angles—a feature of particular importance in routing DVI and other differential, multi-component signals.

The RClamp0504M exhibits very low capacitance, adding virtually no insertion loss to protected signals at rates up to one GigaHertz. This makes the device ideal for high-speed applications. The robust new device also offers low leakage current to help maintain signal integrity. Its very low clamping voltage prevents “latch-up” and cumulative degradation of protected circuits. The device can also withstand repeated voltage surges without being damaged.

The RClamp0504M features a 5V working voltage; ESD (electrostatic discharge) protection compliant with IEC 61000-4-2, Level 4 (greater than 15kV); high surge capability (12A, 8/20µs); and a JEDEC ten-lead MSOP surface-mount package that requires very little board space.

Key Features of the RClamp0504M

  • Reliable, integrated design protects four high-speed signal I/O and one positive power rail
  • Optimized for protecting data signal rates from 100MHz to more than 1GHz, such as DVI, HDMI, USB, GbE, and Firewire
  • Low capacitance (5pF max, 3pF typ) maintains high-speed signal integrity
  • Very low clamping voltage—one diode drop above the supplied reference voltage
  • Working voltage of 5.0V
  • ESD protection to IEC 61000-4-2, Level 4 (8kV contact, 15KV air) and protection from cable discharge events
  • High surge capability (12A, 8/20µs)
  • JEDEC MSOP 10L surface-mount package

Pricing and Availability

Samples of the RClamp0504M are available immediately from authorized Semtech representatives and distributors. Production volumes will be available in approximately four weeks. Prices start at $0.62 each in 10,000-unit lots and datasheets are available on the Web at www.semtech.com.
