Semtech Smart LDO Dual Linear FET Controller Improves Design of Dual Output Power Supplies in Notebooks, Desktops, and Other ApplicationsSpace- and cost-saving device is optimized for low voltage input-to-output differential supplies Camarillo, California - December 16, 2002 Semtech Corp. (Nasdaq: SMTC), a leading supplier of analog and mixed-signal semiconductors for communications, portable devices, computers, and industrial equipment, today announced a power controller that allows designers to implement simpler and more compact distributed dual power supplies. The SC338 Dual Linear FET Controller provides two regulated output voltages to support power supply requirements in the latest notebook and desktop computers, PC expansion cards, embedded computers, set top boxes, network hubs, routers, and other communications systems. Since the desired dropout voltage performance and output currents for target applications are set using external MOSFETs, maximum flexibility is afforded to designers. The SC338 dual linear FET controller is designed for input supplies ranging from 4.5V to 13.2V, with two independent and fully adjustable outputs, depending on input supply. For instance, with a 12V input the output range is 0.5V to 3.3V, while a 5V input yields output voltage range of 0.5V to 1.8V. The SC338 provides two output accuracy options, ±1.5% or ±2.5% reference voltage. The device also exhibits very low quiescent current in shutdown mode, typically 500 to 600 µA depending on input voltage. The SC338 provides superior voltage regulation despite variations in line, load, and temperature, yet the device dissipates very little power. Designed to control two external pass N-channel FETs for regulation of two independent supply planes, the device is optimized for use in modern microprocessor-based designs. For example, the SC338 can be used to provide 1.8V, 1.5V, or 1.2V required by the latest generation of chipset and peripheral components. Adjustability down to 0.5V means existing designs can be easily adapted as future voltage requirements move below 1V. For low voltage input-to-output differential supplies, the SC338 enables designs to be built without a switching regulator, thereby reducing component count. Eliminating the inductor and bulk capacitance requirements required in switching regulator designs also provides a significant reduction in total solution cost. The SC338 also avoids the ripple and transient response limitations that can arise from using a switching regulator, helping to meet increasing tight voltage accuracy requirements without incurring higher solution costs. The SC338 devices provide enable inputs for each linear FET controller, as well as separate power good signals, which provides complete flexibility in meeting power-sequencing requirements. An under-voltage protection mechanism turns off an output if it falls below 50% of the nominal voltage, providing inherent over-current protection in the process. "The SC338, the latest in our Smart LDO family of application-specific power management devices, gives system engineers a new edge in their challenge to shrink, simplify, and cut costs from designs," said Eddie Yeow, Director of Portable Power Management. "These devices will continue to serve as a testament to Semtech's commitment to deliver advanced power control solutions." Key Features of the SC338
