Semtech Introduces Industry's First Universal Power Management Chipset for High Performance Desktop Microprocessors; Creates Intel-AMD Nexus for Motherboard Industry

Single, configurable Vcore power management chipset allows motherboard OEMs and ODMs to simplify component inventories, streamline supplier lists, and shorten design cycles

Camarillo, California - November 25, 2002

Semtech Corp. (Nasdaq: SMTC), a leading supplier of analog and mixed-signal semiconductors for communications, portable devices, computers, and industrial equipment, today introduced a revolutionary Vcore power chipset, the industry's first power supply conversion solution capable of powering both Intel's® and AMD's™ most advanced microprocessors.  This chipset represents the first product in a new line of configurable Vcore power solutions incorporating Semtech's patented Combi-Sense™ topology.

The new configurable Vcore power chipset enables PC motherboard designers and manufacturers to standardize on a single power solution for any microprocessor designed to Intel's 10.X VRD (VR down on board) and 9.X VRM (voltage regulator module) specifications or AMD's K8 or K7 specifications.  In addition to streamlining procurement and reducing inventory exposure, the chipset can accelerate board development cycles by reducing the number of required components, simplifying designs, and decreasing layout sensitivity.

Semtech's chipset comprises the highly accurate and feature-rich SC2643VX scalable, multiphase DC-to-DC controller and the SC1211 high-speed MOSFET driver.  Present and future applications include motherboards designed around the Intel® Springdale platforms using Northwood and Prescott processors; the AMD-K7™ architecture (Duron™ and Athlon™ processors); and the AMD-K8™ Hammer architecture (Opteron™ processor).

The SC2643VX+SC1211 chipset converts a 12V main supply into highly accurate core supply voltages required by next-generation desktop microprocessors.  The new chipset provides on-the-fly processor voltage identification (VID) code sensing, setting Vcore output voltages automatically.  Output-signal phase relationships are programmable for 2-, 3-, or 4-phase operation, providing engineers with the flexibility to make optimal cost versus performance decisions in their designs.

The new chipset utilizes Combi-Sense™ peak current-mode topology to provide loss-less current sharing and stable operation over all load conditions.  Multi-mode over-current protection, superior transient response, noise immunity, and over-current protection in the SC1211 ensure high reliability.  The SC2643VX controller's integrated 6-bit DAC (digital-to-analog converter) provides output voltages in 12.5mV steps with a 0.5% precision set-point accuracy, to meet VRM 10.X voltage specifications.

"The availability of this single, configurable Vcore power solution builds on Semtech's leadership position in multiphase power management," says Ken Boyden, director of desktop power management products at Semtech.  "Designers and managers alike will appreciate the chipset's high performance as well as the significant cost benefits of its design flexibility and versatility."

Key Features of the SC2643VX+SC1211 Chipset
