Ultra Compact Combination EMI Filter and Line Termination Device Protects Upstream USB PortIntegrated TVS and Resistor-Capacitor Network Provides ESD Protection and Filtering Camarillo, California - July 27, 2001 Semtech Corp. (Nasdaq: SMTC), a leader in semiconductor solutions for communications, computers, and industrial equipment, today announced the latest addition to its TVS (transient voltage suppressor) product family, the STF203-22. The STF203-22 is a combination bi-directional EMI filter and line-termination device with integrated TVS for upstream USB ports. It is constructed using proprietary technology that integrates passive components, such as resistors and capacitors, along with TVS devices in the same package. An STF203-22 provides termination, filtering, and ESD protection for one upstream USB port. Packaged in an ultra compact SC-70 6L package, the device is 40% smaller than a SOT-23 package. The STF203-22 meets revision 1.1 of the Universal Serial Bus (USB) specification. "The STF203-22 is a fourth generation USB protection device that addresses the portable market where the trend is toward smaller, lower cost products," said Tom Dugan, director of marketing for protection products at Semtech. "Now, more than ever, utilization of highly integrated and ultra-compact devices is a critical component in meeting these design and performance objectives." The STF203-22 replaces as many as seven discrete components, requiring only 5.3mm2 of pc board space. The STF203-22 will provide ESD protection to IEC 61000-4-2, level 4 (8kV contact, 15kV air). The TVS devices offer an operating voltage of 5V and exhibit only 10pF of capacitance. Signal integrity is ensured by 22 ohm series resistors that terminate both data (D+ and D-) USB lines, matching the cable impedance to that of the differential driver. A 1.5k ohm pull-up resistor completes the termination circuit. This resistor is required by the USB specification to identify the equipment as either a full-speed (connected to the D+ line) or low-speed (connected to the D- line) device. Integrated 47pF capacitors bypass high frequency energy to ground and control the edge rate of USB signals. Applications for the STF203-22 include:
